What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a process of reshaping the gums so that the teeth can be made to look longer. When the teeth undergo any damage due to external trauma, such as cracks or chipping, crowns would be used to restore them. But, for placing the crown, ample length of the tooth crown has to be exposed. Crown lengthening procedure comes in handy during this procedure.
How is crown lengthening performed?
In most cases, crown lengthening is performed by a periodontist as an outpatient procedure. The time taken for the procedure to be completed depends on the number of teeth that have to be lengthened. In case any restorations are present on the teeth, they may be removed and the teeth will be prepared. Local anesthesia may be administered to numb the tissues.
After cleaning and disinfecting the teeth and gums, a small slit will be made on the gums and the periodontist meticulously pulls the gums back. This exposes the root surface, making the teeth seem longer than they used to be. The gums will be put back together and sutures will be used to hold them in position and facilitate healing.
